2016 is a big year for Preveza! Visit the most up and coming base in the Ionian Sea for your next sailing holiday!
Why Preveza? Preveza is the capital of the Preveza prefecture, and a town popular with the Greeks and with European holidaymakers. Situated on the Ionian Sea at the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf, it is a destination used as a hub for visitors to Northern Greece thanks to its proximity to the resorts of Parga and the island of Lefkas. Unlike many other seaside towns, it retains much of its original charm, refusing to change for mass tourism. There are many great beaches near the town, and plenty of places for visitors to explore. In July, the town hosts a choral festival, and in the following month there is a festival dedicated to the sardine. The new tunnel joining Preveza and Aktion is one of the engineering wonders modern Greece. The town is a marvellous place to wander around, with its narrow, winding, pedestrianised streets and old buildings. In the past, Preveza was occupied by the Venetians, French and Turks before it became a part of the Greek nation (1912) and the varied influences of these regimes are seen in the town. The Kastro near the sea front features some stunning reliefs on the outer walls and St George’s Castle and the Pantokrator to the south are wonderful examples of Turkish engineering, both of which are well worth a visit. Because of its important strategic position, the area has witnessed many naval battles through the centuries.
